A visitor is counted once per day, and cannot be followed from one day to the next — the key that identifies a browser is salted with a secret that is deleted after two days. That is deliberate, and it is why the headline figure is the sum of daily visitors rather than a count of distinct people: anyone coming back on another day is counted again.
